International Day of Prayer and Peace

This year's International Day of Prayer for Peace is on Sept 21, 2008, 4 pm at Dar Al Noor.

Dar Al-Noor
5404 Hoadly Road
Manassas 20112

All congregations are invited to bring their unique voices to this interfaith gathering of prayers for peace.

Together, we will honor the many traditions that have found a home in Prince William County.

We are grateful to Dar Al-Noor for extending this invitation to us and to the community during the Islamic Holy Month of Ramadan.

Because religious traditions vary, participatns are asked to limit spiritual statements to spoken expressions only (no music or dance).

All are invited to remain and attend Unity in the Community's monthly meeting at 5:30 pm follwed by a meal at 7:30 pm to break the tranditional fast of Ramadan.

If you wish to contribute food or drinks, please ensure they contain no meat, pork, chicken or alcohol. Modest dress is requested, women are asked to wear a head covering.

To participate in planning the service, please contact Illana Naylor at naylorbarrett5@comcast.net or 703 361 8306.

Once again at the Prince William Fair!

It is almost time for us to have our booth at the fair again. Steve has designed the signs and backdrops and Illana has plenty of anti-war bumperstickers from the Church of the Brethern. The fair starts Friday, August 8 and runs through Saturday, August 16. To find out more about the fair go here.

I haven't kept up this blog much since September of last year, but I hope to do a better job soon. It seems that interest in everything but the election has faded in the liberal community. I support Obama but I realize that it will be very difficult for him to reverse the disasters imposed by the Bush Administration. We need to be aware that to initiate a movement in peace, we have to start on the local level. Dave said this in the meeting last night at Panera, that we need to remind people about what is going on in the world and to do that, we need to reach out in our community, which is Prince William County. I will write again soon, but let me leave you with a link to a blog I found today, The Ramblings of a Sane Man. I hope you enjoy it.

Saturday, August 11th at the Prince William County Fair

Here we are at the Fair. What a great day for something like this. We got a break from the heat. Here is what our booth looked like when I got there.

Here are Dave Hersch and Larry Bryant, two of my favorite people meeting for the first time. Dave is the peace guy and Larry is Mr. Impeachment, but they got along famously.

When Steve Hayes has a good idea, get with the program and see stuff happen. Steve decided he would open his very own Peace boutique right here in Manassas, VA. He had some purchased items but he also had another brainstorm. Steve decided to spray on the image of Veterans for Peace on plain white T-shirts. It was a great way to interest the crowd in joining Veterans for Peace. The shirts that Steve made in the back were used for Veterans for Peace recruitment efforts. He worked very hard to produce them and the people loved them. That's Steve in the second picture below, holding up an Impeach Shirt in Impeachment orange. He gave me one of those to wear while recruiting Alexandria signatures.

When Illana got there, the energy level got cranked up. She and Larry began working the crowd.

Tony Treolis from Veterans for Peace joined us and made some wonderful additions to the booth.

All and all it was a wonderful day and we enjoyed it very much. The crowd was not totally in our favor, but we did generate a lot of interest and I think some people really appreciated that we were there.
